Pelican Hill Golf Club -The Ocean South Course, is a Resort, 18 hole golf course located in Newport Beach, California.
Pelican Hill Golf Club -The Ocean South Course first opened for play in 1991. The course was designed by Tom Fazio.
The Ocean South Course at Pelican Hill Golf Club is a flow of contrasts: from brush gardens framed by sage and eucalyptus trees to a green, virtual moonscape, dropped at every side by deep chasms. The sheer variety of vegetation on the South Course makes playing it a visual and aural feast. Several holes permit 270 degree views of the vast Pacific, with the sight of seabirds and sailboats guiding the fresh ocean breeze. This course is as enjoyable to play as it is beautiful.
Par for the course is 70. From the back tees the course plays to 6,580 yards. From the foward tees the course plays to 5,393 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 17, a par-5 that plays to 570 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 10, a par-3 that plays to 131 yards from the back tees.
Watch out for # 9, a 455 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at The Ocean South Course at Pelican Hill Golf Club is # 10, the 131 yard par-3.

The course was in excellent condition. The greens were the slickest I have ever encountered and had it not been for the forecaddy I would still be out there. The course required every shot in my bag and some I did not have. If you have not played it use a caddy and save yourself some money. It is a fun course but demanding in keeping your head in the game and not getting lost in the scenery. 250+ yard drives help as well! Enjoy the time.

I posted a review on the North Course, so now here goes the South (Ocean) Course ... and let's start with HOLY CRACKERS and a prayer!!! What I will tell you is that if you don't have complete command of your golf game, you will need to clean your shorts after the first 4 holes or so. Then, it just keeps getting tougher ... all the way home to the 18th! Amazingly, this 18 holes seems to tire my body and mind worse than ANY other course I have played, even the Big O (Olympic Club) in San Francisco!!! Optical illusions EVERYWHERE! The distant and not-so-distant hills in the background of each green toy with your mind in such a way that you will miss putts allllll daayyyyy lonnnggggg. Welp, that's golf! And this course will whip you silly! Must play it once to see what I'm talking about, then be your own judge. I have played it about 15 times over the past 5 years. The views are not nearly as breathtaking as the North Course, but then again, who could get away with putting TWO PAR 3's back-to-back ON the Pacific Ocean skirting little $20-million-dollar villas protected by modern art, coral trees and a nice couple drinking martinis from fine crystal in their Gucci bathrobes? Why I think Donald Bren could get away with that! And he did. It's called Pelican Hill South (Ocean) Course. You'll get a kick out of it!

Expensive but worth playing if you find a discount or tournament value. Course conditions are top notch. Layout very good, however only a couple of ocean view holes, short par three's. Added mandatory caddy program. North course provides more expansive ocean views. New clubhouse is spectacular and is high end resort.

Not worth the money....south course is not on the ocean...only two holes are worthy out of 18...felt like I was playing a basic tree lined $50 course. Outrageous green fees paid for excessive staff, not for a premium, beautiful, take your breath away golf experience that I expected for such a premium "ocean" course.

Like the north course it has some awesome views. Staff is great and the pro shop has lots of options. Rented clubs and had a good set of Nikes.

I have played here several times in the past and have always been satisfied. It is an expensive course, but the location is spectacular and it is normally in top condition. However, my most recent round here was a disappointment. I'm not sure if it is due to the drought conditions affecting southern California, but the grass on the fairways was patchy and the greens were in pretty poor shape compared to what I have experienced here previously. Not bad, but for the price you are paying the condition should be exceptional. The staff are friendly and competent, no complaints whatsoever in that regard.
